Jeff Smith endorsed by national democratic organization

Democracy for America announces their support for Jeff:

ST. LOUIS -- Today, Democracy for America announced their endorsement of Jeff Smith, Democratic candidate for the 4th District State Senate seat. Democracy for America supports fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government. It was founded by former presidential candidate and current Democratic National Committee Chairman, Gov. Howard Dean.

“Jeff is dedicated to education,” said Jim Dean, chair of DFA. “He teaches at a local university, co-founded two elementary schools for underprivileged students, and coaches a basketball team for a local Boys Club. Jeff has the credentials and experience to be a progressive voice for change in the State Senate.”

Smith has been an active member of DFA’s Missouri chapter, and leaders cite his passionate activism on a local level as an important reason for endorsing him. “Jeff Smith was at our very first meeting,” said DFA leader Dyan Ortbal-Avalos. “He worked very hard for our group, and shared our principles and ideals wholeheartedly.”

Smith was a “Dean Dozen” candidate for Congress in 2004; he was part of DFA’s first group of endorsed candidates. DFA cited his great campaign organization and strong grassroots effort, as well as his commitment to progressive principles. The group has recognized his continued dedication to grassroots organizing in 2006.
